London Protesters Tear Down Iran Embassy Flag Again

(MENAFN) Protesters stormed the Iranian Embassy in London for the second time in eight days, tearing down the national flag during demonstrations backing anti-government movements inside Iran.

An activist scaled the diplomatic compound's balcony in the Kensington neighborhood, completely removing the flagpole before hurling it onto the street below. The protester then brandished a pre-1979 "Lion and Sun" banner—a symbol of opposition to Iran's current regime.

The individual tried fleeing across neighboring balconies but was apprehended by authorities after reaching ground level.

London Metropolitan Police confirmed detention on criminal damage charges, diplomatic premises violation, and assaulting law enforcement. Multiple officers suffered minor wounds from projectiles and explosive fireworks hurled during the unrest.

Officials deployed dispersal powers after violent confrontations erupted, announcing numerous additional detentions for public disorder and aggressive conduct. Security forces dramatically expanded their deployment throughout the surrounding district.

This marks the second security breach at the compound within one week. On Jan. 10, another demonstrator climbed the identical balcony to swap out the flag, raising alarm about inadequate protection of the diplomatic facility despite police reassurances.
