Seven die, many injuries in bullfighting events in Tamil Nadu, India
The casualties occurred on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday at events held across various parts of the state.
Bullfighting in Tamil Nadu is traditionally part of the Pongal harvest festival. The sport involves men chasing bulls, trying to grab the hump and ride them as long as possible, or attempting to stop the bull and remove a piece of cloth attached to its horns. Prizes such as cars, motorbikes, and gold coins are often offered at these events.
Deaths and injuries are common. Reports indicate that 102 fatalities were recorded between 2017 and 2023.
The Supreme Court of India banned the activity in 2014 after animal rights activists raised concerns over cruelty to animals. In 2017, the Tamil Nadu government passed a law reviving the controversial sport following widespread protests calling for the ban’s removal.
In 2023, India’s Supreme Court upheld the state law allowing bullfighting, stating that “when the lawmaking body of the state has declared it to be part of the cultural heritage of Tamil Nadu, then the judiciary cannot take a different view.”
